Finishing Dead Last

Mariyn, my 9 year old and I decided to do a local 5K on Sunday. It was a small Halloween themed run. Zumara ran it too. I didn't have anyone to watch Amelia. Rich was hunting and I really just didn't have anyone. So, instead of not participating, I decided to take her with me.... and push her in the stroller. Problem solved, right?

Well, I don't exactly have a jogging stroller. I have a britax preview. It's one step up from an umbrella stroller. Amelia is 4/2 and probably weighs 40+lbs herself+ the weight of the stroller. I see people completing runs with kids/strollers all the time. I really didn't think it would be a big deal -- at all.

Like I said, it was a small run. Very small, and well it ended up being mostly runners and very few walkers. I'm not back running yet and I knew I would be slower with the stroller, so I started toward the end of the pack. Mairyn started a lot closer to the front. Before the race, we chose a meeting point, near the finish line just incase she finished before me.

When the race began, Amelia an I took off. It was fun, but challenging. I'd never ran with her in the stroller before. She enjoyed the race. At about 1 mile, it was time for me to walk. Pushing Amelia was a lot harder than I anticipated. I decided that I would just keep going.

For the first half mile or so, I could see Mariyn but soon she had ran so far ahead that I could no longer see her. No big deal, I figured she would eventually tire out and I would be able to catch up. About the 1.5 mile mark, I noticed I was almost dead last. There was a guy behind me, dressed as a redneck runner. Iassumed he was the pacer and wasn't going to to be passing me. Amelia and I continued on our walk/run. I cracked jokes about the pacer behind me and finishing dead last. Hey, at least I was willing to move my body for the full 3.1 miles!

At first, I really wanted to catch up with the other runners/walkers. Then I thought about all the obstacles I had in front of me. No sitter, pushing a 50+lbs stroller w/ kid, while running/walking. No training. And a bum ankle. I thought about all the weight I've put back on. About how well, I used to do and where I am now.... FAT AGAIN!

I **almost** started to feel bad about things and for myself. But something in me just said, keep going. So, I did. At mile 2, I thought about my daughter. Here it was the day before Halloween and my 9 year old is running a 5K. Yeah, mine. Here is my 4 year old, participating in one too (like it or not). I still hadn't caught up with Mariyn. And you know, I was ok with that. One of my biggest reasons for wanting to lose weight was to be active with my children and teach them a healthy lifesyle. I want them to love being active. And Mariyn does!

Mariyn finishsed the run at 36 minutes and 7 seconds. More than 10 minutes ahead of me. I finished at 47 minutes 38 seconds. Probably my slowest time ever but that really isn't the point. My point is, I finished and I enjoyed a great time with BOTH of my daughters teaching them a better healthier way of life. Words can not express how proud I am of my daughter and she was proud of me, even if I finished dead last. :)

The Good...

What have I been up the last several months?

The Good . . .
We've opened our own business and so far, I'd consider it a huge blessing and a success. I have been playing softball at least 4 nights a week. So, I am active. I'm having fun. Despite reinjuring my ankle, I've completed a few runs, Wharf to Wharf and my first Half Marathon at Nike Women's Marathon. Both events were a blast!

July 24, 2011. Zumara and I at the start line for Wharf to Wharf, a 6 mile road race with 15,000 runners plus massive amounts of people enjoying the party atmosphere and scenic views of Santa Cruz, Capitola and the Pacific Ocean.

October 16, 2011 - Nike Women's Marathon 13.1 half marathon finisher! Celebrating my finish in the finiser's area in front of the I run to be sign...

The Bad . . .

Other than softball, I haven't exercised regularly. I have a TON of excuses. But I realize they are just that, excuses. My schedule, my re-injured ankle, my fear of re-re-injuring myself, exhaustion, work, lack of motivation and on and on. Bottom line is, they are all excuses and they are all bad. Some of course, more ligitatmat then others but still...

Yeah, I know I told you I just completed two really big races and goals of mine this summer. I did FINISH them. One foot in front of the other, I moved my body for the 6 mile journey between Capitola and Santa Cruz and Ienjoyed every minute of it. However, notice I said moved my body. I did not say run. I ran maybe only 2 of the 6 miles. This was primarily due to injury. I re-injured my ankle running approximately 2 weeks before Wharf to Wharf. I'm glad I'm glad I participated, I'm glad I finished. But I can not claim that I RAN the entire 6 miles.

Let me get this out now. I'm a brand snob. I don't mean to be necessarily but you throw a Nike logo on something and I immediately think it's gonna make me run faster, jump harder, swim farther, and JUST DO IT better, then without the logo. HaHA corney, I know. So for me, The Nike Women's Marathon (NWM) was sort of an "Ultimate Dream Race" to me. Only in my dreams did I think I would have been chosen or had the opportunity to run in Nike. My Weak ankles (READ EXCUSES) made it very difficult to train or want to run. Other than around the bases at softball, I did not run from July until NWM. Bad choice. The vistas were phenomenal and the overall experience was good. There are some things I have to be truthful about. I ran walked the first 5-6 miles. My running pace was slow. I finished in just under 4 hours (literally, seconds under 4 hours). But I moved my body 13.1 miles and FINISHED! Which is more than I can say I would have done 2 years ago.

The Ugly...

Excercise isn't the only way to lose weight. We all know diet is the most important factor in weight loss. If you eat healthy good portions and watch your calories you will lose weight. The fact is, I struggle to do that. Most over weight people do. With that, I can really do well with my eating when I'm exercising. The sad fact of the matter is, when I'm not exercising, I don't watch what I eat.... BIG Mistake.

Along with that, I know I've gained weight. I haven't steped on a scale and to be honest I'm not ready to. I can still fit into my clothes but they don't look the same on me, and some really just don't "fit" even though I can get my body in them. That much junk should not be in the trunk, if you you know what I mean. ;-) I'm pretty sure my body could no longer fit into ANY size 10. I'm definately pushing a 12/14 (again) and dreading buying clothes.

Apparently, I've gained so much that my husband seen this picture taken in January...

And he did not RECOGNIZE me! He asked WHO it was? Shocking, I know. The man I have been with for nearly 12 years DID not recognize me in a pic that was 10 months old. Yeah, 10 month off = no GOOD for the body. He is pretty much beggining me to go back to the gym. Not for the physical benefits but for the health factor and mental benefits to our relationship, my self and our family.

So, now that I've confessed all of my sins: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Get ready for the days ahead. The good news is, it gets better, Folk's!

5:30 am

I'm not a morning person. Never have been! Growing up, I was always late for school. It doesn't matter what time I go to bed, dragging myself out of it has always been so hard. Even as an adult, I struggled to get to work on time.

But today, here I sit. It's 5:30 am and I'm up getting ready for my 5K and blogging. I'm excited. Yeah, I know it's only a 5K but still this is something more than that to me. A year ago, it was proving to myself and everyone else that I was able to run. Now, I love to run.

A year ago, I was changing. Changing into a new healthier, fitter me. I'm still here. Maybe a little bit chubbier than I would like. Maybe I've been making bad eating decisions. Maybe I've been struggling but guess what? There is something I'm doing that matters more than that. ...

I'm still here! Yeah, that's right. I'm still here plugging away little bit by little bit doing what I can. I'm not giving up, I'm not giving in and I'm not going back.

I am no quitter. I'm determined. I am going to run!

Accountability

I know I need to use some type of training schedule to keep myself accountable and not over do it. Zumara and I were talking last night during our run about setting a schedule and just sticking to it - NO MATTER WHAT. Good idea but I'm always a little scared of time commitments. I know that if we push ourselves we will be back and running in no time. I think we're going to shoot for Mon, Weds, Fri nights running with a longer daytime weekend run.

Last night we ran/walked about 4 miles. I ran the first half mile, no breaks. I was able to run a bit further than the Monday night. Running makes me be more accountable with all my other food choices. When I run, I just feel better, less stressed and more confident.

We talked about our upcoming runs. How excited we are and how we want to Rock the Nike Women's Marathon. We know it's going to be very challenging. San Francisco has LOTS of hills. It will be a great experience but I DO NOT want this to be my first half marathon experience. We want to find something less expensive, closer to home and gain some confidence and experience first. Then Rock San Francisco.

And in case you were wondering what I hope to follow up Nike with.... I'm already looking for more runs, more goals and more challanges. For now, I've set my eye on this, one of the most beautiful places in CA, Big Sur.

Running Season

Zumara and I went running the other night. We ran/walked 3.5 miles. It felt good but again, we walked about half of it. I know I'm holding Zumara back. I didn't even make the first mile running. Kind of sucks, lossing so much ability.

The bright side, I'm rebuilding and I know I will get there. My goal for now, to be able to run 1 mile. Yeah, the same goal I set January 2010. Then - build on it.

I have previously mentioned I am excited about this running season. This is what I'm looking forward to.

The women's festival was my favorite 5K last year. Nike is one of the sponsors, Kaiser has a huge pressence and Whole Foods!! Gourmet buffet breakfast by Whole Foods. Love them! The atmosphere is amazing and the swag was awesome. I'm looking forward to this event.

Wharf to Wharf

Running from Santa Cruz to Capitola, with ocean views? Who could ask for anything more? This 6 mile run will be breath taking and fun. Bands and street performers are along the route to keep you motivated. But really Santa Cruz is beautiful, what more could you ask for. This run sells out every year. When I heard about this run last year, it was already sold out. This year, I made a point to register early. It sold out in about 3 weeks! It will be Crazy Fun!

Of course, I will be running in other events too but these + training will get me prepared for the event of the season.

The Nike Women's Marathon.

ETA: I'm participating in the HALF Marathon. Full marathon is still MUCH further than I want to run... haha

Two sold out events. Races that I've wanted to run for more than a year. I couldn't be more excited.

Nike Women's Marathon

20,000 women, running the streets of San Francisco together. Running with Nike sponsoring the event. Raising awareness for a great cause. Great Nike Loot and a Tiffany's finisher's neckless. Who could resist? Every year the run sells out so quickly, Nike has created a random drawing to select it's participants. I have many runner friends who have entered and never been selected.

I entered in to the Nike Women's Marathon random drawing. I haven't been running much lately and I know the chances of being picked in the random drawing are slim. I entered anyway but... you just never know...

I was picked!

I opened my email this morning, just like any other morning and I notice something in there from Nike. I opened it up, read it twice.... I'll save you from the whole email but here is the nitty gritty... "You're IN, baby!" And I'm so excited!

Motivation... I'm running the half marathon and I've gotta get running! :-) I' m so excited about the 2011 running season, I've got several great races I'm looking forward too!

SOS Run

Opening day for softball was cancelled due to the weather. What does this mean, you might ask? Well, it means my morning is open to run. Yes, I said it, run. Tomorrow, is the SOS 5K run. This time, last year I was preparing myself for this very same run yet only it was my first run. I was determined to run the whole thing but most of all, I wanted to finish. I didn't know if I really *could*. I was very emotional, and over joyed that I could participate in an event like this. I felt like I was being a positive role model for my daughter, taking back my health on stride at a time.

This year, I know I will walk a good portion of the 5K. I will run some too. It means something different to me this year, it's more sentimental and I'm focusing on getting back to where I was pre-injury. Tomorrow, I will get up early and register myself, and my 8 year old daughter. We're taking on the 5K, together <3

My Running Buddy

Zumara, my running buddy got up at 6:30 am and ran 10 miles in the rain. I was so proud of her. It's her first time running in a race without me. Originally, we were supposed to run our first half marathon(s) today. Obviously, plans changed due to my injury. She was nervous about running and almost didn't: it was rainy, it wasn't very organized because it was a free run and you could choose your mileage up to 50 miles. This picture was taken at the 6 mile mark. Did you check out her legs? I'm envious... Did I mention it was early, cold and wet?

I slept in a little longer than I should have but I got up and met her and the 4,5,6, and 8 mile marks. Then back at the finish line. I miss running. I want to sign up for an event but I know my foot/ankle isn't ready yet. I don't know when it will be. Hopefully, soon. All I can do is be supportive for my runner friends.

Zumara was amazing this morning. Check out her legs. I'm so proud of her.

Back in the Saddle Again

After my sidelining injury over two weeks ago, I went back to the gym today. It was so hard to convince myself to go. Yet felt so good just to be there. My ankle is still slightly swollen and slightly bruised but it no longer hurts. It just feels weak.

I've ran on it twice since the fall. Thanksgiving day and last night. Both times about 3 miles. My first half marathon is coming up soon, January 2nd and I need to be ready. It's only about 5 weeks away.

The Santa Monica - Venice Christmas Run
is coming up even sooner on December 11th. I'm debating which run to sign up for the 10K which is a more challenging distance or the 5K that the rest of the family is doing. In all honesty, I'd really like to do both. My reasoning is I won't feel satisfied with just running a 5K as it's not challenging enough for me BUT Mariyn (and a lot of our family) is going to run it so I want to run it and support her. To run both would be really good training for my half marathon . . . as you can see, I'm torn.

Today, I did body pump and cycle. I haven't weighed in and I don't really want to. I didn't want to face the damage today and be a downer. I might weigh in tomorrow. One of my friends at the gym said I was looking thinner. I don't really think that is even possible. I was fairly active painting my house, working on projects and cleaning but I know I didn't make the best food choices and I know how important diet is.

Since my ankle was still weak and it's been 3 weeks since I've done any weight training, I didn't lift as heavy as I normally do. I still pushed myself though, in cycle I could feel my ankle was getting tired and worn out but not sore. Did I mention it felt so good to go back to my normal routine? I missed my workouts, my gym friend and I think they missed me. It's good to be back and besides being sidelined due to pain, I really think I needed the break to mentally re-charge it was a good break.

A lot of ladies at the gym are getting certified to become body pump instructors and cycle instructors. Part of me really wants to do this, but the other part of me doesn't. It's so expensive and just not practical (time or financially) for us right now with our investment coming along. One day, I'd love to do some sort of personal or group training for women who want to achieve their goals by completing events like triathlons or runs. I really think I'd love it and could be good at it... but I have to get more accomplishments under my belt too.

Post Thanksgiving

While most diet bloggers were making plans to survive the holiday, I was not. Intentionally, I did not plan. Is this failure to plan, essentially planning to fail? We will have to wait it out and see. Last year, I dieted during the holidays and I do not regret it. I did great. This year, I did not want to restrict myself. I wanted to enjoy Thanksgiving for a holiday it truly is meant to be, a feast surrounded by family. So I did. No guilt involved.

We celebrated Thanksgiving at our house this year. My younger sister helped me prepare my house by painting and cleaning all week. We picked a pale but cheery yellow and finally painted the kitchen. Only took 18 months to do it, but now my kitchen looks great -well for my kitchen. Before my kitchen barely looked live-able now it looks lovely. Well except the flooring from the 70's that I would love to be able to replace. I worked hard on my house from the time I woke up and got the kids off to school until 11pm and night when I was ready for bed all week. I was exhausted by the time family actually started to arrive on Weds night.,

I didn't make it to the gym at all. I miss it but my ankle wasn't healed all the way and I was busy. My ankle is still slightly swollen but feeling stronger. Thursday morning, Adrienne at Chronicles of a Curvy Housewife and I ran the Turkey Trot 5K. I was really worried about my ankle and being able to complete it.

Above: Mariyn and I by the start line
Below: Davey, Adrienne and I before the race.

There were so many people at the Turkey Trot, my guess nearly 2000 runners (kids included). It was freezing cold but still had a great turn out. The cold air felt like ice hitting your lungs, at times it hurt. It was non-electronic timing with a cross country style start and so the results aren't exact. There was a lot of congestion at both the start and finish line. So it took away from peoples time, mine included. The clock stated 30 mins 9 seconds when I crossed the finish line. That my friends, even with a bum ankle is my personal record. It's been several months since I've ran a timed 5K. Mariyn ran the 1/2 mile kids run, she was so cold but had a lot of fun. She was very proud of her finishers medal and her cousins were envious.
Mariyn post race with her medal and grandma.

Thanksgiving went off without a hitch. 12 people in my home a delicious meal. It had all the traditional fatty items like mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing plus a few new healthier treats like my cauliflower broccoli cranberry salad. I enjoyed the day. Just like I wanted to because really, it's not Thanksgiving Day that makes you fat. Is it? It's the over eating and lack of moving every other day of the year. It's the feasting on the leftovers until you are stuffed to the gills. It's the lack of self control to say no thank you to food and the lack of motivation to get you off the couch to exercise. It's the every day choice we make that contribute to our lifestyle. I'm not going to fret over on what I ate for Thanksgiving. I ate a lot, I was active and I'm moving on.

Quite frankly I know I'm not at goal weight but with God's grace I will soon be.
I however AM living a healthy lifestyle each and every day. Isn't that what being at goal is all about?
Thanksgiving Day post feast.

Running Goal - 13.1

H.A.L.F.- M.A.R.A.T.H.O.N.

My new goal, I'm so looking forward to it and ready for it. I love to push myself harder and harder. I can run 6 - 8 miles now with no real problems. Mentally, I am prepared for it, I believe I can run a half marathon, 13.2 miles. My heart wants to run a half marathon. It will be so hard, it will feel so good.

I've had my heart set on running a half marathon for a while, wanting to take my running abilities to the next level but let's face it. It's nearing the end of running season. Runs are expensive, especially if you sign up late and the holidays are coming up. Plus, there really isn't much offering between now and then in my area for a long run. But I really WANT to be able to run a half marathon the end of 2010.

So... after lots of searches on active.com I found the Brazen New Years Half Marathon. I really can't picture a better way to start of 2011 than running! Then I have the whole year to build on what I can do and improve. Plus, January culminates 1 year of running for me. It was in Janaury 2010 that I decided I wanted to be able to run... my goal was 1 mile. I could barely do 30 seconds. 1 year later, I will run my first half marathon.... Original goal achieved, I think so. Other running goals made and met, 5K and 10K... YES! Pushing myself to the limits... Oh YEAH!

10K: Mission Accomplished!

6 am came really quick this morning. I was tired, I hit snooze and rolled over. Then realized that if I didn't get up my morning would probably be rushed. I made the fam bam breakfast, blueberry pancakes and eggs. I ate one pancake then got myself and the girls ready. We were out of the house by 7:15am and arrived at the race venue around 7:30. This morning, Rich asked me how long I thought the run should take me. Best case scenario, I told him 1 hour; worse case scenario 1 hour and 30 minutes. I checked in, got my packet and bib number and waiting anxiously to start the race. Rich and the girls waited by the sidelines to cheer me on.
Zumara and I just before the race began. =) Ready to run

The race started off great, without a hitch. There were so many runners but I felt prepared. Let's face it, I know I'm not the speediest but I know I can hang endurance wise. Running the course last week really boosted my confidence, I'm sure it helped Zumara too. We knew exactly how to pace ourselves for the course and what to expect. I was so excited to run this morning.

This race wasn't electronic timing so we got towards the front of the pack on the starting line. We took off as soon as the horn went off. The couple miles or so was thick with runner. Adrenaline kicking in, I could feel we were running faster than normal. There wasn't any conversation between Zumara and I. We normally chat the entire run and runners say you should be able to keep a pace where you can talk the entire time. Otherwise, you will probably face burn out. As the pack of runners started to dwindle, I started conversation.

Around mile 3, I could really feel how fast we had paced ourselves the run was getting difficult. I noticed there were too many runners in Zumara's age and I didn't see very many of them in front of us. She paces herself with me, but really I think she might be faster than me and she is about 12 years older. There was several water stops along the way. I grabbed water and kept going at each one. At about mile 4, I wanted to walk but I just kept pacing myself with Zumara and kept going. Somewhere between mile 4 and 5 I got water and drank it a little fast. After taking off, I nearly hurled. Vomit cam up, but it didn't come out. GROSS! There wasn't another water stop for a mile or so. I pushed through.

Mile 5 started out with a steep hill, the last big challenge of the run. Utop of the hill, I knew the rest of the race was easy. I got water at the next stop but instead of drinking it,I just rinsed my mouth. As we hit the 6 mile mark, we picked up the pace. I belched and again almost hurled. I knew we were almost to the finish line. Zumara was doing so good, she made this 6.2 miles look easy and I really thought she had a chance of placing in her age division. I told her not to worry about me, to finish as strong as possible, even if that meant leaving me behind. We both crossed the finish line together, although she is missing from the picture.

Crossing the finish line: Official time: 1 hour 5 minutes and 53 seconds. I ranked 14th in my age division of 20 runners, 112 of 147 runners over all.

I'm really proud of my time. Yeah it's not the best in the world of fast runners but it is a great time. Considering, I'm 5'4" tall, weigh 187 (ish) lbs and couldn't run 30 seconds in January, I think I'm starting to get speedy. Plus, it was my first 10K and being that there were two simultaneous events, I'm sure I was competing with more advanced runners. I probably would have placed higher had I done the 5K. I'm glad I chose to do the 10K and really push myself. I feel so accomplished and grateful. I feel like a runner. =)

Feeling so accomplished! Zumara and I after. Notice the red checks ... lovely, I know.

After the run there was a free kids run. Mariyn ran. She was reluctant to run, but I bribed her with a $1. She did great and everyone got a medal. It was fun for them too and I just love that she is learning a healthy lifestyle now.

My biggest fans. Mariyn & Amelia =)

Ready for 10K

I'm so ready for my next adventure - conquering the 10K next weekend at the Wine and Cheese festival. The event is local and very affordable. Last week, I emailed the race director to find out the exact route being used. I'm very familiar with the neighborhood, as it's where my in-laws live. It's full of rolling hills as it butts up to the river, it's similar to where I live but this portion has more rolling hills and is probably at a higher incline. Zamara and I wanted to be able to do a practice run through the course, so that we know what to expect come race day and we know how to pace ourselves.

Last night, we decided to run it. We got a late start, we drove the course first and it took us a long time. The streets were dark and it was hard to read signs. When we finally arrived back at the movie theater (the start and finish point) we were both a little intimidated it seemed so far! Even though it was late (after 10:30 pm) I knew the neighborhood well enough to feel safe. We ended up running the course as well as the distance of the parking lot at the theater because I didn't know where the start and finish lines would be exactly. We did a short cool down walk, stretched and got water. Oh was I thirsty. It was after midnight by the time we got in the car and came home. What kind of crazy people run this late at night, you might ask? lol

I guess we're just driven and motivated to run. Zumara and I fit it into our schedule no matter what it takes. For me, that means running after I put the kids to bed. It really is the only time I have to run. It works well for the both of us. Yeah, I seen several people staring at us like we were on something to be out running that late. It's much healthier to be out running until midnight than drinking and partying like most of the people we ran past last night. So I don't feel to bad. Once I came home, I drank another glass of water and got in bed.

This morning, I decided to use mapmyrun.com just to make sure we covered the course correctly. We did plus some! Due to the run in the parking lot, we ended up running 6.5 miles!
Taking my total running mileage this week to 22 miles! Which, makes me want to go run 4.2 miles today, so I can say I ran 26.2 miles this week, the same distance as a marathon. For that reason, I just might :x

9/20

Today was a day of rest, or it should have been. I didn't go to the gym this morning and it felt a little odd staying at home. I'm so used to training but I felt I earned the day off. My upper thighs/hip flexers are a little sore. I'm still having breathing issues and I feel tired. I really hope I'm not getting sick. I should have slept in later. But I did the things mom's are supposed to do on a Monday morning, I got up with the kids and got them off to school.

I had a lunch date planned with my girl friends today. I had shrimp tacos, yummy! Plus I had to go to the university after picking up my girls from school. I know this all means nothing to you, but it was a lot of driving. When I'd rather be home sleeping.

I'm already thinking of my next activity or event to train for and create a goal. Before, I was thinking a half marathon. But I'd really like to do another triathlon. Heck, I'm a true athlete and I know I'd like to do both. I see a lot of **wishing** in my future and surfing on active.com A girl could get herself in some serious trouble with all the activities I want to do. =)

TRI - a learning experience

What I did right:

Event: The venue was great. My hotel was affordable. The event was well organized. I was registered in advanced and I'm glad I went to the Expo and turned in my stuff the day before. I got all the first time jitters out of the way the day before. I was able to understand the transition area better and route a little.

Training: Athletically I was well prepared for the distances. If my health was better that day, I could have gone further, even in that cold water and steep terrain of the Sierra Nevada. My body was rested from taking a few days off of training just before the event but also strong enough to complete everything.

Clothing: I'm so glad I chose to wear purple. I stood out just enough but wasn't glowing. My pseudo tri suit worked well in the water and on land. Great for the price.

Pacing: I listened to my body so that I finished with no injuries. Even at times when I wanted to go faster.

Nutrition: I used nutrilite supplements: Rhodolia, edurance cubs, and XS energy drinks. Plus Luna protein bars. I had high quality energy the entire race without ever feeling let down and sluggish.

Gear: I had all the essentials. I didn't forget anything. More experienced athletes even commented on what a great idea bringing a bucket was. I seen a few other buckets as well. Not only did it make for a quick spot to sit and put on my shoes but it made for an easy clean up and nothing got left behind, stolen, or lost. I bought a new hat and I love it. Holds my hair back and out of my face so much better than a pony tail. I'm sure I'm going to get lots of use out of it everyday. I also bought sunglasses, but broke them on the drive home -- bummer.

Fans: My family came and cheered me on. I remembered those who supported me even though the weren't there, they cheered me on. God was there, supporting me every stroke, pedal and stride, I could feel him cheering me on.

What I need to improve on:

Event: I loved the event and would do another in Tahoe. I could have become more familiar with the route. It was a bit confusing at times. Also the porta potties were difficult to get to.

Training: If I do another at high elevation, I need to get acclimated with the elevation. It really effected my breathing.

Clothing: My clothes were good except after being bloated and wet they were stretched. Causing them to ride up in areas they normally wouldn't. Also, the number belt was a good idea but it sort of sausaged my stomach. I didn't realize it at the time but you can clearly see it in my photos. My stomach does not look that bad normally. It could have also been bloating.

Pacing: For the swim, I need to figure something else out. My swim time was great, a PR but I'm still coughing up phlegm today. Given the circumstances, I think I did exactly what I should have.

Nutrition: I let myself eat heavier a few weeks prior to the event. I don't think my body was ready for all the extra carbs and didn't have enough veggies (fiber) to push them through. Thus resulting in constipation on race day (weekend). My race nutrition was good. A nutrition belt would have been helpful.

Gear: My biggest flaw was not bringing an inhaler, I will not forget it next time. I'm still having a hard time breathing and coughing up phlegm. Other than that it was in my bike. The mountain bike's tires are far too knobby to advance in speed. Short term solution is to get road bike tires on the bike. Long term solution, get a road bike. I wish I would have been better prepared for the walk between the beach and the transition area. I had ideal shoes at home for that, instead I was in flip flops -- probably not the most effective. Cycle shoes, I hear would be helpful too. Hopefully soon I will be able to get some. My wetsuit worked but not ideal for triathlons. It was what I could afford at this time. If I continue to do tri's , I'll want a better suit once I reach goal weight of course. A nutrition belt w/ water bottle would be nice too. It's something I could use at other athletic events too.

Fans: At the end of the event, we lost my little girl, Amelia my 3 year old. I broke down into tears. I went to go get my stuff out of transition, she was with my family. When I returned my mom said she was lost. It was one of the scariest moments of my life! By the grace of God, she was fine and we quickly found her. It wasn't anyone's fault she got lost but it's hard to keep track of 4 children at an event like this. My mom was there to help me and watch my kids. My sister and her two kids tagged along. All 7 of us shared one hotel room, with only 2 beds. I can't say I got a good night sleep while I was gone. Although, I'm glad they came it made the weekend a bit harder. Finding triathlete friends to compete with/against, like a tri team would be phenomenal.

Iron Girl - Triathlon in Tahoe

** Warning this is going to be a long blog**

If I had one word to describe this weekend it would be awesome. To sum it up things didn't go exactly how I had planned it was a learning experiene but I came, I saw and I "Tri"ed.

Friday
I spent the day with my husband. He was planning on going hunting this weekend for opening day. He took the day off of work to spend time with me. I was spoiled, he took me out to breakfast and bought me a new pair of running shoes. I was planning on leaving town around 3 pm, as soon as my girls got out of school. But we left town much later than expected. My mom, my girls and I. We wanted to take my mom's Denali. My older sister, and her two children decided to come along, at the last minute. In order to fit everything in the car, I had to take the front wheel off of my bike. It was easy to remove, no big deal, right? We saw a ton of wild life including deer and a mountain lion on the drive up. Some of which could have easily become road kill but I didn't want to bring a deer home before my husband. We ended up arriving in Tahoe, after 10:30 pm and very, very tired. Originally, I planned on running a bit Friday to get acclimated with the elevation and thinner air. Yeah that didn't happen.

Saturday
morning, it's official, I'm 29! I was so excited to be in Tahoe. My only plans were to complete the mandatory athlete check in ( Expo and turn in my bike) and relax on the beach surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. I got up bright and early. I figured it would be best to check in and get my bike turned in as soon as possible. It took me a while to get my bike together. I could get the wheel back on, but the brakes were messing up. At first, I couldn't get the brake line back in the bracet then when I did they would rub the tire. I couldn't ride my bike 15 miles with brakes rubbing the tires. Also the brake line kept falling out the bracet. I have no bike tools and I'm so not mechanically incline. I was really wishing my husband was there. I finally rigged it so it would work - ok. Not perfect but ok. I took my bike to check in around 9:30 am, only to find out that check in starts at 11 am. So we went and got breakfast and drove around a bit.

At 11, I checked my bike in. There was line of athletes. All of them looked so experienced. A lot of them did different triathlon team trainings and wore their team shirts. They all looked young, fit and had top not bikes. I was intimidated! Here I was, with my mountain bike (with mountain bike tires), inexperienced and still overweight. After checking I, my family met me down at the expo. It was really neat and I got a ton of free-bees! The kids had a good time and made posters to cheer me on. As more athletes arrived and I got to talking to them, I knew I wasn't the only inexperienced triathlete. And while my gear wasn't triathlon specific, I started to feel much more comfortable.

We stayed at the expo a lot longer than I expected. It's hard to get in and out of anywhere quick with 4 kids, ages 8,4,3, and 2. I got to listen to the course talk and found out that the transition area is 1/4 mile from the beach and we would have to travel streets to get there. We decided to check out the beach, on our way down I noticed lots of debris including glass. I knew I couldn't do it barefoot, I didn't want to risk injury. Tahoe was truly beautiful, such an amazing landscape carved by God. I bought myself a few things at the expo, including and iron girl hat (as worn in the pictures), a key chain and the belt to put your bib number on. That night we went out for Italian food. Endurance athletes tradition of eating pasta the night before the race! My food really wasn't that good but I forced myself to eat it anyways. I knew the nutrition would be vital come morning.

That night, I got all my gear together in my bucket. Set out my clothes, the girl's clothes and prepared myself to get up early, I knew I would be walking to the event. I wanted to get my transition area ready and I didn't want to forget a thing! Our hotel was just a few short blockes from the venue. It was an older hotel but clean and comfy. Plus it was less than half the price of the venue's hotel and really just as close. Score!

Sunday Race day
I got up bright and early 6am. Got myself ready, ate a banana and a protein bar. I put on coffee for my mom who I knew would be getting up and ready with the kids as soon as I left. I didn't have any pre-race anxiety or jitters. Except, I hadn't been able to pass a bowel movement all weekend. I was bloated. I always get constipated on race weekends! Ugh!! I was uncomfortable to say the least.

It was a cold morning, I think they said 37 degrees. I set up my transition gear, and got myself ready for the swim. I made the 1/4 mile walk down to the beach. So many of the athletes had really nice iron girl wetsuits. I anticipated the swim being the most difficult portion of the race for me, and seeing these girls in really nice professional looking wetsuits was a bit intimidating. The swim was divided into 4 waves, mine being the last. It was a cold morning, and the sand felt like icey rocks. My feet were sore and numb at the same time. At 61 degrees the water was warmer than the air. I knew I was in for a challenge. I decided to start to the outside and lined up in the middle of the crowd. There was a 20 minute cut off time and I was worried. I hit the water with about 100 other women. Immediately I was kicked or hit in the face, arm and legs. My body was taking a beating. I tried to remember my training and focus on swimming efficiently. Not only was I being beaten physically, every time I came up for break a wave would crash in my face and I was literally breathing in water and or drinking it. I felt like I could easily drowned. All the training I had was useless! Nothing could have possibly prepared me for this barbaric swim! I decided to go into survival mode: Do not stop, Do not drowned! Survive, get through it, even if it means doggy paddle! Gasping for air, I decided to do back stroke. Yeah I couldn't see but at least I could protect myself and get some air. I'm so glad I practiced the back stroke in my pool -- A lot! Soon, I was nearing the shore. I got out of the water and hussled the 1/4 mile back to transition.

In transition. I grabbed my nutrition, got my shoes and bike. I was almost out of the transition area when I was reminded to put on my helmet. Opps! Almost forgot! I was still gasping for air. My chest was tight but I was excited to be off on the bike course. It was 15 miles of climbing but the scenery was breath taking. I figured I'd be able to catch my breath on the ride, boy was I wrong. Women were zooming past me on their nice road and triathlon bikes. My bike was nice, or so I thought but at the end of the day it's a mountain bike. The tires are not made for speed. I set a good pace for the ride. Climbing the hills was tough, the elevation in Tahoe is roughly 6300 feet. The air is thin but the views were specular. The climbs were killer. There were many points of the ride that my legs ached and I didn't want to keep going but the trill of competition kicked in. Almost every climb, I was passing women proving my athleticism. I could hear my spin instructor Dana telling me, "this is where the change happens, keep going, keep going." I would mimic my movements to those that I knew were effective in spin, bracing my abs, pushing through with my whole body. But on the downside of the hill, I was being passed. Not because the women's were working harder than I was or were stronger athletes than me but because their bikes were more aerodynamic and made for speed. My breathing was horrible, I was wheezing and out of breath the whole ride -- elevation I assume. My stomach was killing me and it had gone beyond cramping, my colon felt like it could erupt. I was still constipated, full of gas and in pain. Out of breath and falling further behind I was discouraged.

I was nearing half way, cave rock, where we turn aroud come back. At the turn, I had the most beautiful view of Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in the US, surrounded by beautiful pines and blue skies. Taking in the view, I notice off in the distance a small but bright rainbow. Immediately, recharged I said, "Thank you, God." At that moment, I remembered my daughter Mariyn and as she says, "God's promise". I was moved, spiritually by how awesome our God is. How he not only encourages me even in my weakest moments but is there with me. The ride back was hard but I knew God promised me that I could do it. I gained momentum and was again, gaining position. Up and down the hills, my legs pedaled fast, the pedaled hard. I couldn't wait to get back and tell my Mariyn what I had seen. Physically I was prepared well to do all the climbs. Exhausted and still short of breath, I started to climb the steepest hill on the return route. Women in front of me were faltering. I was too out of breath to pick up the pace and go around them. They looked as if they were losing control over their bikes and struggling to make it up the hill. I pedaled in front of as many as I could but at 3/4 of the way up the hill decided to dismount and walk, get a drink and attempt to catch my breath. It just seemed safer. At the top of the hill, I got back on my bike and made the last leg of the ride. Athletes were already finishing up the last leg of their run!

Back in transition, I racked my bike, took a bite of the protein bar and took off on the run. Near the run out gate, my family was standing there cheering me on. I gave them a high 5 and I took off.

I needed to go to the porta potty (consitpated no longer) but couldn't easily access it. I knew the run was going by the beach and there were toilets there too. Out of breath and in severe pain with stomach cramps, I stopped and used the porta potty. I knew running was my strongest point but I still was out of breath. In fact, I never caught my breath the entire race. My chest was very very wheezey. Most of the 5K run was up hill. Any day, I could have ran this 3.1 miles effectively but not today. My lungs were hurting and I decided it was time to walk/jog. Mind over matter I told myself and thought of Dave and Adrienne. I knew I would get through, I knew I could finish. Wheezing and winded I wished I had remembered to bring my inhaler. It was at home, as my asthma rarely acts up, I'm not used to bringing it. The last leg of the run was a steep down hill grade. Yeah I could run quickly but you have to be careful. I didn't want a knee or joint injury. My quads were burning. I thought of Zamara, my running partner and how we would pace ourselves. I was happy, I knew I was near the end. Once th road was flat I picked someone in front of me and decided to ignore my breathing (mind of matter) and catch up. With in the last hundered feet or so, I passed 2 women and crossed the finish line!

That was it, I not only survivied. I "TRI"ed. I'm now an iron girl triathlete! 2 hours 20 minutes and 12 seconds after getting in the cold waters of Lake Tahoe, I swam 400 meters, bikes 24 K, ran 5K and crossed the finish line.

Words can not describe how accomplished I feel. My biggest fans, my girls, my reasons for "Tri"ing greeted me at the finish line. Yeah, I know in the world of triathlons I could have done a lot better but I stated with a goal, and I finished. Athletically I'm a tough competitor but it was a learning experience and I know exactly where I have room for improvement. Nearly 500 women registered for the event, 374 women officially finished. I came in at 336 overall with plenty of room for improvement. I'm ready to "Tri" again and to encourage others to do so.

Over an hour after finishing my race, I caught my breath. I coughed a lot on the way home, lots of wheezing and phlegm. I used the inhaler as soon as I got back home and am now ready for a good night sleep.

What to wear?

I'm preparing my mental list of needs for my triathlon. Reading up on "what do I need" type articles to make sure I've got everything. My wetsuit is in route and should be delivered on Monday. I really hope it fits. I ordered it from Costco, in a size 12, I hear wetsuits in general run small. Costco is great about returning things if I have any problems like it not fitting properly. Thinking positive ::: it will work::: if not, I can always rent one at there.

My next issue, the swimsuit. Yes, I own a pool. Yes, I own swimsuits but not an athletic swimsuit. I went to two sporting goods stores today, Big 5 and Sports Authority to find a swimsuit. While, I was able to find ones that fit me none of them were supportive enough of "the girls" to think about wearing the entire race. So I swim in it, under my wetsuit and then what? Change in front of 1000 people? How could I get a bra under it, to provide support? In theory, I was hoping I would find a suit supportive enough to wear under a shirt throughout the race. I want my transitions to be quick. I'm not stripping down in front of that many people and I don't think there is a changing area.... that's just not practicle either. What to do? It's too late to get a triathlon suit and honestly, they're too expensive. Plus, I have no real way of knowing how much support they are going to provide. What to do? What to do?

Once I left big 5 dissappointed, I figured I'd come home and look on the internet. I know it's really too late to order anything now. But, it never hurts to look. The triathlon suits really don't look much different than some running clothes. I went to Sports Authority to check out their selection of swimsuits, in hopes of finding something more supportive. I did find a more supportive swimsuit at the Sports Authority. It was $66 and I really don't think it was going to be THAT supportive. Full of hope, I ran in place in the changing room trying each one on, putting them to a quick test. If I was bouncing all over the place running in the dressing room I knew it wasn't going to cut it for 15 miles of cycle + 3 miles of running.

Disappointed I walked around the store. Trying to figure out what to do. I checked the clearance racks and looked at all the apparel. Wishing, I had planned better and found a way to get a good trisuit I decided not to get a swimsuit. I really don't see myself getting much use out of an athletic swimsuit. I'm still trying to lose weight and won't be wearing it much more this year. I highly doubt it will fit me next summer. So really is it worth $66 just to wear a few times at most? No, it's not to me. I've been wanting a cute pair of shorts for the gym. I know I'll get plenty of use out of them in cycle. I had an idea! Why not wear form fitting training clothes under my wetsuit, instead of a swimsuit, like I would have worn a trisuit? I could always make my own tri-suit or psuedo tri-suit out of something I would WEAR again. Why not? As long as if it's form fitting and thin enough it should fit under the wetsuit just like a swimsuit, right? Then I won't have to worry about awkward changing moments or support issues. Plus, I will be able to get use out of it again and again, until it no longer fits me. Most of the athletic tank tops have a built in bra, which isn't ideal support on it's own but way more supportive than the swimsuits I found. I just might be able to make this work. Luckily, I have a few days to try the outfit out in the pool or find something else.

I ended up getting these items: My unofficial tri-suit.

Nike Women's Pro Core Sport Top - Mine is a pretty purple color and I got it off the clearance rack for less than $18.00

Nike Women's Pro Core Compression Shorts

I have a feeling this could be a learning experience but I am going to try it out in the pool without the wetsuit tomorrow. I think it just *might* work and if it does, my transition times will be quick! ;-)

My little athlete

At last nights event, flyers for other activities were placed on my car. One of them was for the California kid's triathlon on August 8th. I cleaned out my car today bringing in several flyers. Mariyn picked them up and was looking at them talking to me about racing. I told her one of the flyers was for a kids race where you swim, bike and run in the same race. Immediately, she said, Cool, can I do it? Ahh warms my heart, my little athlete.

I asked her if she was sure she wanted to do it and talked to her about the distances. For her age it's a 50 yard swim, 1 mile bike and half mile run. I explained to her how many laps in our pool that would be then how far on the bike then how far she would have to run in terms (to places) she would understand like biking to school and back and running to her school. Of course, she would have to practice but I'm already training for my tri. She could easily tag along and train with me. Plus, her distances shouldn't be too fun. All participants get a medal and I know she thinks that is really cool.

I'm going to talk to her more about it and her dad but it looks like I have a future triathlete on my hands. After dinner, we went swimming and before I even got in the pool she swam 5 laps. I think she ended up swimming about 15 laps total. Soon, we will going biking as soon as we are done swimming just so she can see how it feels. I love my little athlete.

On a personal note, even though I slept most of the day, I swam 60 laps. 50 free style 10 back stroke.

Davis Moo-nlight 5K

Running last night in the Davis 5K was so much fun! The atmosphere was great.

Although, Davis isn't that far I'm not sure I've ever had a reason to go there before. The race was downtown and at night. Simultaneously as the 5K was a half marathon (13 miles)there were a lot of spectators and participants. Jamba Juice was out there giving away free smoothies to EVERYONE. They were small, maybe 8-12oz but you could come back and get as many as you like. My family loves smoothies lately so the girls were in for a treat!

My friend Zumara ended up running with me. My other friend decided last minute not to go. My sister in law and her friends were running the half marathon. I really wanted to run it too because I knew I could do the 5K relatively easily. I want to try to push myself harder but I doubt I'm ready to run a half marathon either. I think I can run further than what I am but it is a little hard to believe that I might ever be able to run 13 miles, a 1/2 marathon. It was so neat to watch these true runners come in. One of them finished right around an hour. Can you believe that, running 13 miles in an hour! Crazy. The first woman came in around 1 hour and 20 minutes! My sister in law and her friends finished in about 2.5 hours but she said they took a short cut because one of her friends were hurt and probably only finished 11 or so miles. It was great running with so much family there cheering us on. Such a good fun event.

The main reason I chose to run the 5K was to be supportive of my friends. It was to be their first race and I wanted to support them and run with them. Unfortunately, one of my friends decided not to come. So Zumara and I ran together. It was fun.
My time actual finish time was 34 minutes 20 seconds! Not bad, but not fantastic. I was actually about 2 minutes slower this 5K than the last. Not my personal best but that's ok. The first mile and a half I wanted to give up, I wanted to walk. My stomach was aching and I thought I might have to stop and go to the bathroom. I thought about having Zumara go ahead with out me and I'd catch up. I didn't though, I pushed through and soon enough we were running toward the finish line as we rounded the last corner, we decided to sprint. She did great and at the end of the race both of us agreed next time, we're registering for the half marathon.

Oh and Pics - you'll will want to see pics!

and a photo finish thanks to my mom's Iphone :)

Sweat Tea & Swimming

Had a really good day. Have I ever mentioned how much I love sweet tea? Yeah, I know it loaded with sugar and with calories. But it's so delish! I'm sure it contributed to my weight gain. I remember going to Micky-D's and getting sweet teas almost daily (sometimes multiple trips were made per day) because I loved them so much. Lately I've been wanting to drink something other than water and I'm burnt out on crystal light. I've really been craving Sweet tea. Naturally, I've been fighting the craving because I know how loaded with sugar it is. But then I got this grand idea to try something new. Instead of sugar, I thought why not use splenda? It's a 0 calorie sweetener. I eat it in so many other things, why not sweet tea? I bought tea bags and today brewed some tea and poored in Splenda and stired it up while it was still warm. Then refrigerated. Now it's not the same as Mickey-D's but it is satisfying the craving and well probably a better choice, calorie wise.

The girls wanted to go swimming. So after dinner (bison burgers) I took them. I finally broke down and bought a swim cap. So I decided to try it out and do some laps. Well 50 laps to be exact (40 freestyle 10 backstroke). The swim cap = GREAT investment! I'm not fighting my long hair or getting tangled up in it. I am smoothly gliding through the water, well as smooth as I know how, ha ha. It was so much easier to swim my laps. My next swimming investment: Goggles and a swimmers swimsuit (possibly a tri suit). Goggles first sooner than later.

Oh and I registered for my next 5K Davis Moo-nlight run. I've got two friends who are going to run with me. It's Saturday night. I'm excited - not as much for me as I am for my friends. It's both of their first 5Ks and it's a really big fun event. I wanted to do the half marathon, but it's their first race and I just don't have that much extra money. Plus, I know 13 miles is a bit of a stretch for me - a really long possibly impossible at this time stretch. I would probably end up walking a lot of it. So, the 5K it is for me. I know it's still going to be a great event. :) I'm excited.
